General Updates

River Levels

2016-05-10

River levels rose by just over a foot after yesterday's rain. Thundery showers are falling at present and it looks like another band of heavy rain is on the way. The river is fishable at the moment , suited best to spinning and worm. This rise, coupled with very big tides, mean prospects for the week ahead are excellent. One more salmon was reported over the weekend but catches should improve considerably from now on.

Net Marked Fish

2016-05-04

Since our last post, a further 9 salmon have been reported caught along various sections of the river. This weekend past, 3 were caught on the fly. Pods of fish continue to move through in the low water but a flood would be very welcome at this stage due to the profuse growth of algae in some stretches.

Attached are photos of a fish captured last week displaying net marks (confirmed by IFI). The fish more than likely escaped the nets somewhere along the open coast. Such evidence of net marked fish is very concerning, especially at this time of year. We'd like to urge all anglers, of all rivers, to report details of net marked fish to IFI, even if they were caught a few weeks ago.

Glenda Powell

2016-04-21

Bandon Angling Association was privileged to be in the company of world renowned fly fishing instructor Glenda Powell today. The scene was set as the weather and water conditions were perfect for demonstration. This morning, Glenda taught the Juniors (Bandon Scouts) all about the life cycle of salmonids and the basics of fly fishing. After a beautiful lunch (courtesy of the Munster Arms Hotel) she taught the Seniors a variety of techniques in double handed casting, such as the Spey and Snap T cast. From everyone involved today, thanks a million Glenda Powell!

Three in a Row

2016-04-21

Same man, different fish! Anthony scores a hat-trick and tags out with another beauty of 9lbs, taken on the worm. A few fish have been caught since the last flood with a steady trickle of salmon scaling the river all the time. Spinning has been the most successful method. Prospects are great as the water is dropping slowly, tides are building and cloudier conditions are forecast for the coming days.
